In the wake of the disappointing European championship exit, and the inevitable let down of Wimbledon, English sporting pride is a little thin on the ground. Into that vacuum, cricket comes to bat.
It is hard to think of anything more quintessentially English than cricket. It epitomises everything that is good about the country. More importantly it represents a sporting arena in which we can compete with the very best in the world.
What makes cricket so fantastic is the balance that it strikes between excitement and refined repose. In a world of stress and noise their is something calming about just the idea of cricket. The sport is enjoyed by millions via the medium of the Test Match Special radio broadcast which brings to mind the same gentile atmosphere as an English seaside resort.
Another thing that makes cricket great is that, while popular with youngsters, it is a sport that can be played by older participants. Indeed cricketing legendW. G grace played well into his 50s! Also, admitting to playing the great game will likely not cause your life insurance premiums to rise either.
So, three cheers for cricket! Here's hoping for a summer with lots of it!
